The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has directed to strictly implement the cow slaughter law. The NGT had asked for information from various States on the implementation of the law and it was ascertained that due to cow slaughter, the number of cows is decreasing alarmingly in the country.
The tribunal had sent show-cause notices to the State Governments but for a few months no replies were submitted. But due to frequent appeals by former engineer MC Rao, social activists Ashwini Kumar and Manoj Paikray of Gajapati district, the tribunal swung into action. On NGT’s behalf Swatantra Kumar, Raghuvendra, AS Rathod, A Deshpande and D Ajay issued non-bailable warrants on March 8 against senior Karnataka officials and asked pay a fine of Rs 20,000. The tribunal also criticised the indifferent attitude of the Kerala and Delhi Governments.
In Odisha, the cow population has decreased by 21.52 per cent. In Kerala, in the last decade 80 per cent of the cows have been slaughtered in Kerala. Therefore he and his friends are striving for strict implementation of the cow slaughter law, said one of the petitioners Rao to the mediapersons.
