Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Wednesday said that despite the fast expansion of the electronic and social media, the print media would continue to thrive in future.
“The media has played a major role in strengthening democracy in India. Its role has strengthened democracy’s roots. Whenever democracy has faced threats, the media has played a constructive role,” Patnaik said while addressing a function to mark the second anniversary of Odia daily Prameya here.
The function was presided over by the newspaper’s editor Prof Ganeswar Mishra and attended by Minister of Finance Prasanna Acharya, Minister of Energy and Information and Public Relations Arun Sahu and Jnanpeeth award winner Pratibha Ray.
Ray said, “We are living in the midst of an information revolution and it is for the newspapers to decide as to which information they should provide to the public and which news should not be published in the society’s interests.”
She, however, expressed concern about the current use of language and coinage of words in Odia newspapers. “Where is the need for using words unnecessarily borrowed from somewhere when we have the right Odia words for the same,” she remarked.
