Upset that the girl he married was not the same he was shown in photograph before marriage, a youth quit home a day after the wedding.

Sunil Gahana alias Jitu, son of Narahari Gahana of Jaisinghpur village under Gangarampur panchayat under Sadar police limit, on June 25 last had tied the knot with one Suprava Mohapatra, daughter of Praffulla Kumar Mohapatra of Chhanda village under the Marshaghai police station limits.

The family members of both sides as usual had visited each other’s house to see the groom and bride before the marriage was arranged. The bridegroom’s family had demanded Rs2 lakh, but the bride’s family had paid Rs1.5 lakh as dowry promising to clear off the rest later.

Jitu, however, discovered that the girl that he saw in the photo during his marriage negotiation was not the same one to whom he married. As a result, he fled his house, abandoning his wife and all family members. To his utter disappointment, Jitu found that his wife was dark

in complexion.

Jitu’s elder brother Nirmal alleged that the girl to whom his brother’s marriage was negotiated with was not the same married off. Though, the newlywed Suprava’s father made an attempt to convince Jitu’s family that he has only one daughter, Jitu and his family members remained unconvinced.

Consequently, Suprava’s father lodged an FIR at Kendrapara Sadar police station alleging that as he failed to provide the remaining sum of Rs50,000 as dowry, his daughter was being tortured by his in-laws. Meanwhile, acting on the FIR, the Sadar police have started an inquiry.
