Newly-constructed canal duct cracks in N'pada

Published on:

The issue of low quality and corruption in the construction of the lower Indra Irrigation Project (lIIP) has cropped up again as an aqua duct constructed in the left main canal to cross the NH-353 underground developed crack and water gushed out of the hole.

The farmers of nearby villages gathered at the site and agitated when the NH officials tried to divert the gushing water to a nearby field.

The lIIP had allotted fund to the NH for construction of the aqua duct. "It started leaking from very first year after the construction, when the rain water flew in the canal,” said the villagers. The left bank of the canal had breached a few days ago at 9 km distance from the source, when the water was released from the dam on trial basis. When that was repaired, water breached again at two other places. "Breaching and cracks continue in the canal; it would be difficult for us to get water," said the farmers.

The Executive Engineer of NH, when contacted, told that he would come to the site to inquire the matter to take a decision.
