Newborn girl rescued from Cuttack rly station

Published on:

Child line officials of an orphanage here rescued a newborn girl from the premises of the Cuttack railway station on Saturday morning. The baby, believed to be either a day or two-day-old, was lying wrapped in a piece of cloth in front of the Station Manager’s cabin.

Railway police sources said the Station Manager’s peon first stumbled upon the baby at around 6 am and soon alerted other railway officials, including the police. A frantic search was made in the station premises to trace the mother of the baby, but it turned out to be futile.

Finding no other alternative, the railway officials got in touch with the city’s leading orphanage Basundhara, which rescued the baby. “We took the baby to the hospital and she is found to be healthy and fine,” said Narayan Shukla, an employee of the orphanage.

Meanwhile, it was learnt that the railway police have made a station diary entry and started questioning local people and vendors to trace the baby’s mother, who abandoned the baby. The police said abandoning a child below 12 years is a culpable offence inviting charges under Section 317 of IPC.

It may be recalled that two girl children of less than a week old had been rescued from the Cuttack railway station about a year back.
