There is a lack of adequate manpower in the field of neurology in the State, where cases of death due to road accidents are on the rise. Only 10 to 15 neurologists are there in the State, said Dr Bikash Kumar Mishra, senior consultant of Neurology Department of Apollo Hospitals Bhubaneswar at a function here on Saturday.
While several awareness drives are being held on major health issues like HIV and diabetes, there is less awareness on strokes and road accidents, he rued.
In a bid to train and educate physicians and faculties about the recent advances on neuroscience and various aspects of neurological diseases, the Apollo Hospitals organised a two-day national-level Continuing Medical Education (CME) programme, Neuro Update 2014, here from Saturday.
The seminar also aimed at creating more and more interest among students in the neurology subject. Postgraduate trainees, physicians, neurologists and neurosurgeons were benefited by the conference, in which over 200 delegates took part.
A total of 12 speakers from across the country including AIIMS, Bhubaneswar Director Prof Ashok Mohapatra and Director and Vice-Chancellor of NIMHANS, Bangalore Prof P Satishchandra delivered their talks on various aspects like development in neuroscience in terms of therapeutic management, imaging and treatment modalities of diseases like stroke, movement disorder, infections and epileps. Dr B Agarwalla from the USA also attended the event to deliver his presentation.
Besides, ‘The Friend’ trust would felicitate doyens of neuroscience and give two research grants including Prof RN Sahoo research grant and Prof BS Das research grant to postgraduate trainees of the State working in the field of neuroscience from this year onwards, informed trust chairman Dr Mishra.
