NCW chief blames State Govt for crimes against women

The National Commission for Women (NCW) chairperson Mamta Sharma on Saturday accused the State Government of “insensitive” to crimes against women.

“The Odisha Government is insensitive towards crimes against women. There is an increase in crimes against women in the State,” Sharma told media persons here after arriving on a two-day tour to the State to probe rape and murder of a blind girl in Puri.

Rejecting Sharma's allegation, Panchayati Raj and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kalpataru Das said, “let the NCW chairperson read NCRB data on the crimes against women in Congress-ruled States before giving comments on Odisha situation.” Sharma, who is on her first visit to the State as NCW chairperson along with Head of Honour for Women National Campaign, Manasi Pradhan, will meet the parents of a 14-year-old blind girl, who was raped and murdered on June 7 in Puri-Konark marine drive on Sunday, besides visiting the place of the crime.

On Saturday, they attended several programmes on tribal women in tribal pockets of Khurda district.
