Naveen 'clean' image fails to inspire his men

Published on:

Society is so increasingly getting materialistic and utilitarian that pursuit of self-interest and quick buck is fast gaining legitimacy as a virtue. Consequently, corruption rules the roost in every sphere and it is not easy to root it out.

Go to a Government office with any work and you will find the concerned official eyeing something from your purse. The contract system is imbued with an infamous per cent culture from tip to toe.

For as small a project as a cement concrete road, the contractor has to part with certain percentage of the project sum. Forget about the venal bureaucracy, even the local representatives have their share in each project. This is now no open secret, but a widely known fact.

A society that is getting so much swayed away by a selfish orientation that none has time to think about probity and morality, let alone inculcating them in personal life. These virtues are confined to schools but to emerge your head in market you have to follow certain other principles. Maybe, they are at odds with ethics and tenets of sound living.

For that matter, what can a Chief Minister do if his Cabinet colleagues are neck-deep in graftIJ His cleanness cannot stop people from taking maximum advantage of their authority and power. So, the boss cannot be blamed for the preponderance of corrupt in his team. Only, he can be blamed that his transparent image fails to inspire his men.

Most often when a BJD man is on the spot for having link with a scam, the CM is targeted by the Opposition and especially his detractors. He is alleged to be shielding his colleagues, be it MP Kalpataru Das in the land scam, Minister Bijayshree Routray in house scam, or MlA Pravat Tripathy in chit fund scam.

A man not amenable to whim and haste that the CM is, he takes time in every case to first study it well personally. If he finds a man to be innocent and an allegation to be politically-motivated, he just remains silent. But when there is public cry against it, he takes some step by getting it probed just that the truth comes out. But when the CM finds an allegation to be true prime facie, he never resorts to a dilatory tactic. Rather, he first of all snaps his or his party’s relation with the person before going for a higher action.

The CM is loved and revered by the people not just because he is the son of a stalwart but because of some of his personal traits which other leaders are glaringly short of. Well-begun is half done, but the beginning of current term of the CM has been full of hitches. He seems to be in a difficulty to keep his flock together, especially when the intraparty feuds are coming to the fore. The CM must check it by all means to retain public trust.
