The National Commission for Scheduled Castes is on a four-day visit to Nabarangpur district. Commissioner Ajit Kumar Sahu visited various schools, municipalities and Government departments of the district to understand the situations on the ground.
The District Association for Scheduled Caste submitted a petition to the commission stating that 30% of the total population of Nabarangpur district belongs to Scheduled Castes and they need equal opportunities.
The petition further elaborated that as four assembly seats in the district are reserved for Scheduled Tribes, people belonging to Scheduled Castes are lacking opportunity to run for both Lok Sabha and Assembly elections. Not only that the chairmanship in 10 panchayat samity (block) of the district is reserved for Scheduled Tribes.The Association also demanded the opening of special schools for students of Scheduled Castes and equal opportunities in education and jobs.
