The National Aluminium Company limited (Nalco) entered into an MoU for skill development with the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) and the National Skill Development Fund (NSDF) in New Delhi on Thursday.

Ministry of Skill Development & Entrepreneurship (MSDE) Secretary Rohit Nandan and Nalco CMD TK Chand were present on the occasion. Chand said the MoU assumes great importance because it is the first such agreement in the mining sector of the country.

“With this, we have committed 5% of our CSR budget for this capacity building programme, and the MSDE has evinced interest in developing a Centre of Excellence in Nalco,” he added.

On behalf of the Nalco, ED (Corporate Affairs) AS Ahluwalia signed the MoU while the NSDC and the NSDF were represented by their respective CEOs Jayant Krishna and Pawan Agarwal.

Notably, the Prime Minister launched the Skill India Mission in July this year, which envisages scaling up skill training efforts to meet the rising national demand and enhance employability of youths of the country. It is estimated that only 2.3 per cent of the workforce in India has undergone formal skill training compared to 52 per cent in the US, 68 per cent in the UK, 75 per cent in Germany, 80 per cent in Japan and 96 per cent in South Korea.
