N’rangpur rape, murder: Cong bandh on Dec 26

Alleging police inaction in the gangrape and murder of a minor girl incident of Gumandali village under the Kosagumuda police limits, the Congress has called for a 12-hour bandh in Nabarangpur district on December 26.

PCC working president Pradeep Majhi told reporters, “We urge the people to support the bandh. All business establishments will remain closed. Buses, trucks and other vehicles will go off the road.”

Notably, the girl had gone missing on December 13 night after she went out of the house to relieve herself. When she did not return, family members started searching for her but in vain. On December 14, her body with scars and bruises was found in a farmland near her house in Gumandali village under Koshagumuda block.A pair of trousers was also lying near the body, leading to suspicion that she had been gangraped and then killed.

District Congress Committee president Muna Tripathy said, “We had demanded Rs 20-lakh compensation to the victim’s family and immediate arrest of the culprits. The district administration assured the girl’s family of assistance but has not fulfilled the promise.”

Eight days after the incident, the police are still investigating the case but yet to make any headway except for detaining and interrogating four youths of the Kotpad police limits in Koraput district.
