Mystery still shrouds death of budding girl scientist

Mystery still shrouds the death of a girl student of the Odisha University Agriculture and Technology (OUAT), who died under suspicious circumstance on November 18, 2014, just a week after she returned to Bhubaneswar after attending the fourth international Rice Congress held in Bangkok, Thailand along with one of her colleagues and four professors. The parents of the deceased meritorious student who was also receiving Philippines Scholarship for research work in weeds have demanded a CBI inquiry into the mysterious death.

Kumari Suchita Tiwary, a second year (MSc) Agronomy student of the College of Agriculture of the OUAT from Muzaffarpur district in Bihar, was staying at the university’s Maa Jhadeswari Hostel. Though it is still unclear whether the budding scientist committed suicide or was murdered, the Khandagiri police have only registered a case of unnatural death and are sitting idle. Victim’s mother Mundrika Kuamri told reporters here on Friday that though the hostel authorities, her daughter’s friends were maintaining that she had committed suicide at her room in the hostel, but there was no suicidal symptom on her body.

Her family members, on the other hand, suspect foul play. “After reaching at Bhubaneswar from Jharkhand on November 19, we saw injury marks on several parts of her body which was kept at the Capital Hospital. We do not believe that it was a suicide rather a coldblooded murder,” said victim’s father Harendra Kumar. He alleged that six months have been elapsed into the death of our daughter. Neither the Khandagiri police nor the OUAT authorities have reached at a conclusion.

“Though we have urged the hostel authorities not to clean the hostel room, but they clean the same along with the Khandagiri police hurriedly thereby destroying evidences. “My daughter is a meritorious student. She could not have committed suicide as she was mentally strong. So, we suspect that she has been killed,” said Kumar, who works as Horticulture officer in Jharkhand.

Kumar said, “My daughter attended the international Rice Congress at Bangkok along with DPME Prof SK Rout, Agronomy department head Prof B Behera, Prof AP Kanungo of department of Extension education, Prof CM Khanda and her colleague Ipsita Kar. But they are yet to be grilled by the Khandagiri police.” Suspecting that the OUAT authorities and the Khandiagri police are hand in gloves to suppress the matter, the victim’s parents urged the State Government to hand over the case to the CBI to find out the real reason behind the death of their budding scientist daughter.
