Murder convict escapes from Sundargarh jail

A life imprisonment convict escaped from the Bonei Special Sub-Jail here, while working in a garden on the jail premises on Monday.

Sources said as many as nine inmates were brought out to work in the jail garden area. At around 9.15 am, a jail staff on duty found one of the inmates missing. After failing to locate him, the jail officials informed their senior authorities about the missing.

The escaped prisoner was identified as Devaraj Munda (32), who had been in the jail for the last seven years after being convicted by the court in a murder case.

“We have intimated the local police about the escape and also are conducting raids in his possible hideouts,” said jailor of the Bonei Special Sub jail Birendra Mahali.

The police suspect that the convict might have used the small door beside the garden to escape. “We are investigating the matter and conducting a search operation to locate him,” said Bonei Police Station IIC GC Sahu.
