Having not got the wages of three months, above 60 male and female contractual sanitary workers of Talcher Municipality have stopped their duties since Friday morning. As a result, heaps of litters are found dumped in the different places of the municipal areas.
Sources said the contractual sanitation workers are not paid wages and other facilities as per the municipal rule. They are paid only 200 per day on no work no pay basis.
According to labour law, they should be paid Rs 325 per day. The workers have been complaining regularly before the executive officer, for due wages but they have been lent a deaf ear. So, all the contractual sanitary workers have decided to stop their duties till payment of their wages.
Babuli Naik, a worker, told that they have been neglected since long as far as their daily wages and supply of sanitation equipment, like shoes, napkins and soaps are concerned. On the other hand, untrained supervisors are deployed to oversee their day- to- day work, who often misbehave with the workers. “We will not go for duty until we get our arrear wages,” he added.
When asked, the executive officer assured that the outstanding wages of the contractual sanitation workers would be paid on Monday.
