Employees and workers, including the sweepers, of the Dhenkanal Municipality are on a cease-work agitation since Sunday protesting the assault on Municipality Chairman Indramani Behera and Executive Officer Padmanav Nayak by two BJP and Congress Councillors during a council meeting.
An FIR has been lodged at the Town police station by the Municipality Chairman and EO in this connection. The Municipality employees are demanding arrest of the unruly councillors.
Notably, the BJD had managed to assume the office of the Municipality Chairman on the support of six BJP councilors and with an understanding to handover the office to BJP after two years. BJD nominee Indramani Behera had also recurred support of 11 Congress Councillors. Ultimately Indramani won the seat. BJP aspirant Nabin Dalei though was expecting Indramani to resign after two years, Indramani disowned the previous commitments.
During a council meeting, aggrieved BJP Councillor Nabin and Congress Councillor Rudranth asked the Chairman and the EO to bring the proceeding look to the council hall and then after they would sign in the minute book to ensure their attendance. However, the Chairman and the EO did not agree with their proposal that caused the violence and physical assault.
