Much ado about 'threat' letter to State Governor

The belated buzz about the “threat” letter of “Maoists” daring Governor Dr SC Jamir to leave Odisha for reasons not mentioned within 15 days had turned to be a matter of much fuss as the letter had been received three months ego and the period of so-called ‘warning’ already expired since long.

A day after media reports of Jamir receiving a threat letter purportedly from Maoists published on Monday, Director General of Police (DGP) KB Singh on Tuesday told reporters that the letter is three months old and the police had taken the matter seriously and tried to trace the real senders of the letter.

The Home Department and the Intelligence Bureau had been appraised about the matter. The letter written in Hindi had come to the Governor from Jharkhand’s Giridih district by post in a sealed envelope, said the DGP.

Claiming themselves as cadres of the outlawed CPI(Maoist), the signatories of the letter, Ravinda Verma and Mantu, threatened to blow up the Raj Bhavan if Jamir did not leave the State.

The Odisha police came to know from their Jharkhand counterparts that similar letters had earlier been sent to the Governor and some Government officers in that State by the same senders.

Police sources said the letter was a hoax as similar threat letters were sent in Jharkhand too.

Senior police officers are of the view that somebody has tried to play mischief as the contents of the letter are inaccurate in Odisha’s context.

On February 3, 2015, the Commissionerate police had received an anonymous letter, which threatened to blow up the Naveen Niwas, the residence of Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, the State Assembly building and the BJP’s State office here by using “time bombs”.

Thr office of the State Election Commissioner had too received a parcel with a fuse on January 13, 2012 while the Chief Secretary’s office here too received a parcel with a detonator on January 20, 2012.
