To address the growing prevalence rate of diabetes and ensure comprehensive care, the State Government on Wednesday signed a Memorandum of Understanding with two agencies having expertise in the field of diabetic treatment and management.

Health Secretary Pradipta Kumar Mohapatra signed both the MoUs with the Novo Nordisk Education Foundation (NNEF), a nonprofit organisation, and the Kanungo Institute of Diabetes Specialty (KIDS), Bhubaneswar in the presence of Health Minister Damodar Rout at the State Secretariat.

Melvin Oscar D’Souza, Managing Trustee, NNEF, and Dr Alok Kanungo, Chairman, KIDS, signed the MoUs, respectively.

The NNEF through its Changing Diabetes Barometer (CDB)  programme has planned to roll out a diabetes control programme to reach out to a maximum number of people at the primary and community level of Jagatsinghpur. Khordha, Nuapada and Balangir districts and subsequently to other districts, according to Minister Rout.

The NNEF would help mobilise persons with diabetes to PHCs, CHCs and DHHs for regular treatment by engaging trained personnel for diabetes management in primary and secondary system.

Diabetes being a multi-organ disease, it affects heart, kidney, eye, nerves and feet and all other organs and delaying diagnosis leads to complications. The KIDS would provide quality care by opening Diabetes Care Centres in the State’s 30 districts headquarters.
