'Monsoon to remain weak for a week'

Though the southwest monsoon has arrived in Odisha, it would continue to be weak at least for a week, the Centre of Environment and Climate (CEC) at the SOA University here said on Monday.

Although a well-marked low pressure area lay over Bangladesh and its neighbourhood, the westerly wind flow has changed into north-westerly with increasing height towards the upper level in a phenomenon known as ‘veering’ which heats up the atmosphere, Director of the Centre Dr SC Sahu said.

There is strong convection in the east-central Bay of Bengal, which causes rain, away from Odisha while the possibility of subsidence of air over the region does not support rainfall with higher intensity. However, there could be sporadic light to moderate rain with thunderstorm and lightning at some places in the next 24 hours, Dr Sahu, former Director of the Regional Meteorological Science Centre of the IMD here, said.

“This situation is likely to continue till tomorrow, after which rainfall will decrease appreciably and monsoon conditions will remain weak at least for a week,” he said.
