The south west monsoon, the arrival of which has been delayed this year, may advance into some parts of State on June 21 as a cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal was likely to move towards north-west Bay of Bengal triggering the process, the Centre for Environment and Climate (CEC) of SOA University, said on Wednesday.
The system was presently over east-central and adjoining north-east Bay of Bengal and could move towards north-west Bay of Bengal off north Odisha-West Bengal coast on June 21 causing rains over the State from June 20 night, CEC director SC Sahu said.
This would cause the south-west monsoon to advance into some parts of the State and the monsoon rain was likely to continue for the next three days, he said.
Sahu said the very severe cyclonic storm ‘Vayu’, which headed towards Gujarat before veering away, had caused the monsoon current to be weak over Kerala and adjoining west coast after its onset over the southern State as the moisture was dragged away towards the centre of the cyclonic storm.
‘Vayu’ had since weakened into a low pressure area which was over Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh on Wednesday and was likely to move towards east Uttar Pradesh and Bihar as a cyclonic circulation on Friday, he said.
Sahu said that monsoon current showed pulsating characteristic as it did not move continuously and took a pause after advancing some distance. It waited till further surge developed to help it move forward, he said.
