Six years ago on this day, November 8, the Government of India had announced the demonetisation, for which the Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes were countermanded. However, in these six years, Leftwing extremism (LWE) or Maoist activities, instead of decreasing, have increased, said the Pradesh Congress at a Press conference here on Tuesday.
Senior Congress leader and former State Finance Minister Panchanan Kanungo pointed out that Prime Minister Modi in his address to the nation had said demonetisation was being carried out due to three major reasons: to curb accumulation and circulation of black money; to stop circulation of fake currency and to control terror and Maoist activities.
The demonetisation affected all sections of people in the country. Particularly, the elderly people had to stand for hours before the banks. Many people also lost their lives. Labourers, farmers, small traders and small income groups were severely affected. There was a slowdown in the economic growth in the country and more than 4 crore people had harrowing experiences, said he.
The Prime Minister had taken the decision in the interests of his own party and capitalist friends. He should now admit his fault and apologise for it, Kanungo demanded.
PCC spokesperson Rajani Kumar Mohanty, Youth Congress spokesperson Nalinikanta Nayak and senior leader Ashok Swain were present.
