Tension prevailed as locals set ablaze a liquor shop on the Khordha-Jatni road on Wednesday protesting the death of a youth in a road mishap late on Tuesday night.
The deceased Jagannath Baral died in the accident in front of the liquor shop at around 3.30 on Tuesday night. Following the incident, the family members had taken his body to Bhubaneswar for postmortem.
Alleging that the accident occurred due to the presence of the liquor shop, locals staged a demonstration soon after Baral’s body reached the village on the day.
Demanding immediate shifting of the liquor shop and adequate compensation to the kin of the deceased, the locals staged the demonstration by blocking the Khordha–Jatni road.
While the demonstration was underway, hundreds of women ransacked the liquor shop and set it on fire. Getting information, senior administrative and police officials rushed to the spot and tried to pacify the irate mob.
Later, the road blockade was withdrawn after the liquor shop owner agreed to pay a Rs 4-lakh compensation to the deceased youth’s family and bear all expenses for cremation of his body.
