The National Green Tribunal (NGT) in New Delhi on Monday issued a notice to the Chhattisgarh Government to file an affidavit within two weeks over violation of its Kolkata Bench order over its Mahanadi water dispute with Odisha. Hearing a petition filed by Mahanadi Banchao Andolan convener Sudarsan Das, the NGT directed the Union Ministry of Water Resources and Forest and Environment and the Chhattisgarh Government to depose before the court.
The Odisha Government argued in the tribunal its Chhattisgarh counterpart should be punished as it violated the NGT’s Kolkata Bench order. The Kolkata Bench had directed the Chhattisgarh Government to stop construction of the projects in the upstream of the Mahanadi, but the latter allegedly violated the directive.
