Chhatrapur MlA Dr Priyanshu Pradhan and social worker Prof Govinda Panda have demanded development of adequate lighting to illuminate the entire area of historic Potagada Fort in Ganjam town and regulation of entry of tourists to this heritage site. Notably, the Potagada Fort is existent since the Kangod Empire and was rebuilt during the Moghul rule. It was later captured and innovated as a French colony between 1759 and 1768. Subsequently, the tussle between the French and the East India Company led to war in which the former captured and renovated the fort as a British colony. But the monument was ruined later.Senior BJD leader Rama Chandra Panda also held a discussion with Ganjam district Collector Premchand Choudhury in Brahmapur on Thursday requesting him to expedite the lighting work in the Potagada area along with provision of sitting places in the fort premises to attract tourists in larger numbers. The Collector reportedly assured Panda to look into the matter shortly.Mention may be made that during Panda’s tenure as Assembly Deputy Speaker, the fort was renovated and flood protection walls were constructed to prevent intrusion of river Rushikulya mouth water into the fort.
