Missing women: NHRC notice to CS, DGP

Published on:

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has sought an action-taken report (ATR) from the Chief Secretary and Director General of Police (DGP) over missing of women in the State.

Acting on a complaint filed by Human Rights Watch secretary Sangita Swain, the commission has asked the Chief Secretary and DGP to submit ATR within four weeks.

The petitioner alleged that nearly 11,000 women have gone missing in the State in last few years across the State whose whereabouts are yet to be ascertained.

“During January 1 to December 18, 2015, around 3,200 women have gone missing. Such cases are rampant in Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Jharsuguda, Sundergarh, Angul, Ganjam, Kendrapada, Nayagarh, Rayagada, Kandhamal and Jajpur districts,” the petitioner contended.

She appealed to the commission to take appropriate action in this regard to trace the missing women.
