Taking suo moto cognizance of media reports that two minor girls were raped and two others were molested by the in-charge of an orphanage located on the outskirts of Sambalpur town, the National Human Rights Commission has issued notices to the District Magistrate and Superintendent of Police to submit reports within four weeks.
The commission has observed that the contents of media reports, if true, raise a serious issue of violation of human rights of inmates of the orphanage. The sexual exploitation of the girls allegedly happened during the past one month.
The incident came to limelight on the first week of April. Following the incident, the district administration has closed down the orphanage and shifted the inmates to other orphanages. The accused has also been arrested.
