In a deeply shocking incident, a minor girl was set on fire by miscreants after they allegedly passed lewd comments and tried to gangrape her at Madhupur village under the Narla police limits in Kalahandi district on Thursday.

The victim sustained grievous burn injuries and was admitted to the District Headquarters Hospital here in a critical condition. She was later shifted to the Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research at Burla as her condition deteriorated.

It was alleged that the girl’s two distantly-related uncles, Sana Sahoo and Bulu Das, were involved in the incident.

According to reports, the duo had passed vulgar comments at the girl on Wednesday, following which she told the incident to her family members.

The two accused on Thursday attempted to rape the girl at her house in the absence of her parents but failed in their bid. In a fit of rage, they poured kerosene over her body and set her on fire, it was alleged.

Hearing screams of the girl, locals rushed to the house and rescued her.

Police detained the accused for interrogation.
