Mining scam: Rly staff trapped by CBI

Published on:

Joruli railway station manager Subash Chandra Gupta was caught red-handed by the CBI on Wednesdaywhile taking bribe of `7,000 from a transporting company for transporting more iron ore than allowed by the authorities.

Sources revealed that CBI officials also seized cash of Rs 5 lakh from Gupta’s residence at the Joruli station. However, CBI sources declined to reveal the name of the transporting agency, which was going to be obliged by this act of the station manager. The raid was conducted by the CBI team led by Inspector SN Rath from Bhubaneswar.

Simultaneous raids were conducted by the CBI in Gupta’s paternal house at Puri and his home in Visakhapatnam.

It is pointed out that because of nexus of railway staffs with mining mafias and others, Odisha was in news for the infamous mining scam in the past and the Justice Shah commission was appointed to inquire into it. Many mines were closed by the Government as a measure of damage control for which large numbers of people have been thrown out of employment and are now leading a miserable life.

However, the Wednesday case has confirmed the frequent media reports that corruption is still going in the mining sector even though the Government boasts of transparency in the mining transactions.
