A State-level seminar on ‘Development-induced displacement and resettlement law in India’ was organised by the Balasore law College in association with the FM University on Thursday.

FM University Vice-Chancellor Sibaprasad Adhikary, Dr Pradip Sarkar of KIIT University, Prof Sudhansu Mohapatra of Sambalpur University, Sukant Chand of MS law College, Cuttack, Balasore Family Court Judge Srikant Mishra, among others, deliberated on the topic.

The speakers said the people displaced due to reason of development not only lose their nativity and livelihoods but also miss the society, social contacts and environment amidst which they were born and brought up.

The speakers said that in 2013, a resettlement and rehabilitation Act was made which includes the right to fair compensation to the displaced persons and transparency in land acquisition from them.

Since the Act provides for fair compensation during acquisition of land, determination of the market and existing value is the key factor n this respect. While compensation is borne by a company, it is not known how much amount is exactly paid. So, this matter comes under the preview of the RTI Act, the speakers pointed out.

Prof Adhikary spoke about the necessity of law and its impact on the society.

Balasore law College President Himansu Das presided over the meeting and Principal RN Panda introduced the guests.

Vice-Principal Rajlaxmi Jati gave the inaugural address while senior lecturer Sarbeswar Sahu offered a vote of thanks. Besides students, practising lawyers and researchers also participated in the seminar.
