Medical college student raped in city

A first year girl student of a private medical college here was allegedly raped by a caretaker of the college on Tuesday night.

Police have detained the accused and are interrogating him.

Sources said the Hi-Tech Medical College Hospital caretaker Manoj Khatua allegedly raped the student after taking her into his room in the campus.

Both Khatua and the girl are currently under police custody.

College chairman Tirupati Panigrahi said, “The incident that occurred at around 7.30 pm (on Tuesday) came to the light at around 12 pm. The girl did not know the caretaker’s name. We identified the accused and handed him over to police.”

“We will fully cooperate with police in the investigation,” he added.

However, Khatua refuted the allegation and made a shocking statement that he found the girl in a compromising position with a male student in the campus.

“I warned them that I would bring the matter to the notice of the college principal. However, the duo apologised and pleaded with me not to disclose the matter to anyone. Then, I came back to my room and went to sleep. But at around 4 pm, I was picked up by police from my room. I didn’t do anything. They have framed me,” he claimed.

DCP Satyabrata Bhoi said, “We have detained the caretaker for questioning. Both he and the victim girl would be sent for medical examination. Investigations are on.”

After the incident, the girl students are worried about their safety in the college campus.
