The Government is spending a meagre Rs4 per child for each mid day meal (MDM) in schools while it provides Rs30 per prisoner lodged at different jails for meal. Why the students are being provided food at a lower price,” stated a petition of a rights campaigner prompting the National Human Rights Commission to direct the Odisha Human Rights Commission to act over the issue immediately.
“It is astonishing that on what morality the Government is spending mere Rs4 per a child per meal while it provides Rs30 per prisoner for each meal. The student will not get quality food at the Rs4 per meal scheme,” stated petitioner Sangita Swain of the Human Rights Watch. She urged the commission to direct the Government to enhance the MDM fund. Taking cognizance of the complaint recently, the apex human rights watchdog directed the OHRC to act over the issue.
