Taking cognisance of a complaint filed by rights activist Sangita Swain, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued notice to the Union Government, all States and Union Territories over withdrawal of medical seats by Medical Council of India (MCI).
The commission on Tuesday passed the order to all the State and Union Territory Health Secretaries seeking an action taken report within four weeks.
The complaint alleged that India is a backward country in respect to medical service while it is well known that doctor and public ratio is too low due to the shortage of doctors for which public health hazard are common.
People are depending upon the quacks. Now-a-days doctors prefer to absorb themselves in private sector hospitals instead of Government Hospital due to lack of opportunities and the poor policy decision of the State Governments.
“While we need five times more doctors of the present number the Medical Council of India has withdrawn the approval of various medical colleges across the country including 100 seats of Sardar Raja Medical College, Kalahandi citing lack of infrastructure and human resource,” alleged the petitioner.
The petitioner urged the commission to take step to avoid doctor scarcity, besides initiating action against those responsible for the shortage
of doctors.
