MCI derecognises 26 seats in 2 Govt medical colleges

In a major jolt to the State Government, the Medical Council of India (MCI) has derecognised 26 PG seats at the MKCG Medical College, Brahmapur and VSS Medical College, Burla, thanks to the callous attitude of the college authorities for the non-submission of compliances to the MCI.

The apex medical body has derecognised 10 PG seats (one each in Biochemistry, Opthalmology, ENT and Orthopaedics, three each in Medicine and Surgery) in MKCG Medical College and 16 seats (one each in Biochemistry, Orthopaedics, Radio-diagnosis, ENT, SPM, Paediatrics, TB & CD, two in Pathology, four in Medicine and three in General Surgery in VSS Medical College.

“In view of dearth of specialist hands in peripheral cadre to serve the rising need of patient care, the Health Department initiates all out efforts and leaves no stone unturned to increase the PG seats and any feasible proposal for issue of essentiality certificate received from college authority is acted upon instantly by the Government. But it is a matter of great regret and serious concern that this objective of Government is miserably defeated due to callous and careless attitude of college authorities manifested in non-submission of timely compliance to MCI, which ultimately ends up in de-recognition of PG courses by MCI,” said Health Department Deputy Secretary Kulamani Mishra in a letter to the dean and principal of the two medical colleges.

The Department has asked the two college authorities to report within three days indicating the circumstances leading to non submission of desired compliance and not following up periodically with MCI.“The list of officials responsible for such lapses may be drawn up and passed to this end. On receipt of your report Principal Secretary has ordered to conduct a review meeting for finalising disciplinary action against the errant officers,” said the letter.
