JMM, on Tuesday, lodged vehement protests over the delay in the process of establishment of a full-fledged Government medical college here at Baripada.
The JMM leaders led by Dilip Das, Prabhudan Marandi and Pintu Maiti burnt the effigy of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while blaming the Union Government and raising anti-Centre slogans.
The JMM held the stir against the backdrop of a recent development when a team of experts from the Medical Council of India visited Sahid laxman Nayak Medical College and Hospital in Koraput on April 11, for assessment of compliance of observations, but didn’t visit Baripada. This has created an atmosphere of uncertainty in Mayurbhanj as regards the early setting up of the long-awaited medical college here and also regarding the commencement of admission of students into the Pandit Raghunath Murmu Medical College and Hospital here from this academic session itself.
Remarkably, the district’s other leaders too, cutting across party lines, have now urged the Centre and the State Governments to do the needful for obtaining the all-important letter of Permission (l.O.P.) for the Baripada medical college at the earliest.
The establishment of a MCH at Baripada, it may be pointed out, is a long-felt need in view of the healthcare need and socio-economic development of the backward and downtrodden people of the tribal-dominated district.
