The Commissionerate police on Saturday arrested a person for allegedly raping a young woman on the outskirts of the city.
Interestingly, the accused, identified as Gandharba Nayak (55), had played the role of a matchmaker for the victim’s marriage, which didn’t last long, and she had returned to her father’s home a few months ago.
According to reports, Gandharba had fixed the woman’s marriage with a youth of Balpur village under the Sakhigopal police limits on July 14this year. As the marriage didn’t last, she returned to her father’s house at Uttara on the city outskirts the very next day of tying the nuptial knot.
Gandharba hailing from Mangalpur village under the Pipili police station was staying at his father-in-law’s home at Uttara.
Interestingly, both the woman and Gandharba fell in love with each other and the latter developed a physical relation with her on the pretext of marrying her. But he later refused to keep his promise as per the complaint filed at the Uttara police outpost by the woman, who is three months pregnant.
