An alleged illicit relationship ended in a tragedy when a 25-year-old married tribal woman and her 28-year-old dalit paramour committed suicide by hanging themselves from a tree in the Rangamata forest under the Kaliapani Police Station of Jajpur district on Sunday evening, said IIC of Kalaipani Police Station Raisen Murmu.
Basanti Basky of Ketepruti Village had an extra-marital affair with Bijay Kumar Patra of Sanchelo Village. Bijay worked as a labourer at Sukinda whereas Basant used to sell Handia (country liquor) at Sukinda.
Basanti was married for five years and had no issues. The woman and her paramour ended their lives after their relationship was not approved by their family members and parents.
Recently, Basanti’s husband had fought with her after learning about her involvement with Bijay, sources said.
According to some villagers, Basanti and Bijay were sighted near the Rangamata forest on Sunday evening and on Monday morning some locals saw their hanging bodies and informed the police. Their bodies were brought to the Community Health Centre (CHC) at Danagadi for the postmortem.
