Maoists torched a mobile tower at Kathapada village under Boipariguda block of Koraput district at late Saturday night. Around 30 armed cadres rushed into the village and set the mobile tower on fire using the diesel kept to run the digital generator for the tower.
For the first time, a Maoist letter written in English was found near the tower, taking the responsibility of the incident. It was mentioned that mobile phone companies are placing towers for their profit but not for the sake of public as well as it is not beneficial to the public but is only to keep communication between police with its information network.
Villagers witnessed the whole incident but were unable to explain this to anybody because of fear.
The mobile tower was providing service to the nearer villages like Chipakur, Kolar and Kathapada. So, the ultimate communication mode in these inter areas of Koraput is now destroyed and assets worth lakhs of rupees are lost.
Police are now investigating into the incident while BSF jawans have launched a search operation for the Maoists in the interior pockets of the area.
