Maoists call bandh in R'gada, K'handi, K'mal

Reiterating their threat to people to boycott the panchayat elections, Maoists have called for bandhs in Rayagada, Kalahandi and Kandhamal districts on February 13 when the first-phase polling will he held.

The banned CPI(Maoist)’s Bansdhara, Ghumusar and Nagabali division secretary Umakant on Saturday released an audiotape to the media alleging that the BJD, the BJP and the Congress are doing politics only to fetch votes from people and betraying them in the name of democracy. Their (the political parties’) only motive is to serve industrialists and capitalists, Umakant said.

The Maoist leader also criticised the State Government for failing to ensure welfare of the people despite its tall claims. He cited the examples of farmer suicides, death of children due to malnutrition and the Dana Majhi incidence.

He also questioned the Acche Din (Good days ahead) promised by the BJP after winning the general elections.

Meanwhile, even after 11 days have elapsed into the pasting of a poster by Maoists demanding `1 crore from Subarnapur district’s Sibtula panchayat sarpanch candidate Simanchal Panda, police are yet to make any headway in the investigation.

A poster was found on the gate of the sarpanch candidate Panda of Sibtula panchayat under Tarbha block on January 31 in which he was asked to pay Rs 1 crore, failing which he would be killed in a Praja Court.
