Maoists accuse cops of backing ganja farming

Published on:

A number of Maoist posters resurfaced at various places in Chitrakonda block of the district on Sunday triggering panic among the locals.

The posters were put up in Papluru and Kurmanur panchayats. locals informed the matter to police in the morning after seeing the posters.

The posters have opposed the ganja cultivation in the district and accused the police of protecting the ganja cultivators. The Red rebels also warned police of dire consequences and asked them to stop the practice immidiately. While the local police is charging Rs 1 lakh bribe from the ganja cultivators, the district headquarter police demands Rs 3 lakh. Similarly, the Excise Department officials are also taking a bribe of Rs 5 lakh from hemp farmers, claimed one of the posters.

The district administration should encourage farmers in the area to grow paddy, finger millet and little millet instead, the poster suggested.

It might be mentioned here that earlier the police had said that ganja is one of the major sources of funding for the Maoists and they were providing protection to the ganja mafia in the extremist-infested areas.
