Maoist threat: Security stepped up in S'pur jail

Keeping in view the possible attack on jails to release Maoists cadres, the jail authorities here have become extra careful on security aspect.

“We are as careful as ever. However, we have taken extra measures to curb any such attacks from the Maoists to release their cadres staying here,” informed Sambalpur circle jail jailor SK Rout.

“Since the day Maoists have been lodged here, we have taken all possible measures to keep the jail safe. But the present scenario warrants us to be more alert,” said circle jail superintendent Pulin Bihari Mohapatra. “However, the main problem before us, at present, is not security but accommodation of a large number of inmates far beyond the capacity,” Mohapatra said.

Speaking on the accommodation problems, the superintendent said that the strength of the circle jail is 541. “But 721 inmates are staying here now and the agitation of the advocates has added to the problem. At the same time, 16 male and five female inmates have been provided accommodation here,” he informed.

He further said that 18 jails are there under the Sambalpur circle jail. “We have also informed the jail authorities under our jurisdiction to be alert,” he said.

Patrolling around the boundary and close observation of the activities of the outsiders from the watch towers are the normal activities here on safety point of view. Apart from the normal security arrangements, we have also taken some other precautions in consultations with the district police, he informed further.

When contacted, Sambalpur SP PK Mohanty said, “Police are aware of the matter. At the same time, we are well prepared to thwart any such effort by the unscrupulous elements.”
