Hardcore Maoist Kunu Dehury, who was carrying a cash reward of Rs 8 lakh on his head, surrendered before police in Sambalpur district on Friday.

Informing about this at a Press conference, DGP RP Sharma said Dehury had joined the erstwhile Maoist Communist Centre of India (MCC-I) in the year 2002 and got elevated to the rank of divisional committee secretary in the CPI(Maoist) organisation in 2015.

He was involved in as many as 51 cases (42 in Sambalpur district, five in Rourkela and four in Deogarh district).

He surrendered before police after losing faith in the ideology of CPI(Maoist) and its dwindling support base as a result of intensive operations by security forces, a release of the Odisha police said.

Dehury’s case would be examined as per the existing Surrender and Rehabilitation Scheme of the State Government, the release added.
