Maoist situation better in Odisha: Vijay Kumar

Stating that security action and development should go hand in hand in combating the Maoist activities, the Naxal Management Wing senior advisor to Union Home Ministry K Vijay Kumar on Tuesday patted Odisha for doing good work in both the sectors.

“In Odisha, police and development administration are together doing good work.” he told reporters after meeting Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik. However, he said there are certain areas which need careful monitoring and there is a need to proceed very cautiously.

A former CRPF DG, Vijay Kuamr, who is on a two-day Odisha visit to study the security and development management to weed out the leftwing Extremism, also met Governor SC Jamir at the Raj Bhavan.

Emphasising on coordination between the police and the civil administration, he said security and development are two priority areas to combat the Maoists. ”Whenever there is security action in remote areas, it should be followed by development activities. And the development activities should reach very quickly the remotest areas along with the security-related actions,” he said.

On the demand of more Central forces by the Odisha Government for effective anti-Maoist operations, he said that since there is shortage of Central paramilitary forces, the anti-Maoist operations should be carried out with the available forces.

He said the State should review the Planning Commission and Rural Development Ministry’s assessment on the Maoist issue and the development strategy.
