New DGP Marik spells out priorities
Asserting that he would carry forward the commendable work of his immediate predecessor Prakash Mishra, the newly-appointed DG of Police Sanjeev Marik on Sunday said containing the Maoist menace would be his top priority.
Taking charge from Mishra at the State Police Headquarters here, the 1981-batch IPS officer said he would immediately focus on five key areas of the police in order to win the confidence of the people and boost the morale of the force.
Besides focussing on the Maoist violence, Marik promised to work towards improving the law and order giving special emphasis on curbing and preventing crimes against women.
He also said he would concentrate in improving the traffic situation in the State and continue the police modernisation, which has got a major impetus for over a decade now.
"My top priority would be to win the confidence of the common people and the police would make sincere endeavour towards redressing public grievance in a time-bound manner by opening special grievance cells," he said, highlighting the need to improve civil policing.
"Considering the frequent road accidents in all major cities including the State capital, top priority would also be given to strengthen the traffic system in these cities.
Apart from this, steps would be taken to curb incidences of crime in the twin cities," Marik said. He too said that steps would be taken to halt spread of operations of chit fund companies in the State.
Speaking on the occasion, Prakash Mishra said the Odisha Police in the last two years have achieved success in all major cases including crimes and Maoist menace.
"I hope that the State police would maintain the tempo in the days ahead," he added. Mishra, who has been sidelined as the Chairman-cum-Managing Director of the Odisha State Road Transport Corporation (OSRTC), may join his new post sometime next week, sources said.
Reports reaching here indicated that the new NDA Government at the Centre is keen to appoint Prakash Mishra in some key posts in the CBI or the Union Home Ministry. Prior to his appointment as the Odisha DGP in July 2012, Mishra was holding the Central assignment as the DG of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF).
