When political leaders most often demand opening of more +2 colleges in their respective constituencies as a populist measure, the ongoing admission process in +2 colleges in Ganjam district reveals that there are virtually no students to take admission in the existing colleges.
After completion of the first phase of admission into + 2 course, the college authorities have notified the cut off mark along with the list of qualified students eligible to take admission into the +2 courses here on Saturday instructing the eligible students to take admission in the course during second phase between July 15 and 17.
According to information available, after completion of the first phase of admission into +2 courses in different colleges of the district, there are still 15,713 seats lying vacant, causing worry for the college authorities in the district.
Sources also suggest that, there is not even a single student available to take admission into the +2 course in almost 20 colleges of the district during second phase of admission causing headache for the college authorities.
According to an estimate, currently there are 131 Plus 2 colleges functioning in the district in which the admission into Plus 2 courses is going on in full swing.
These colleges together have a total of 42,690 seats. As per the information available, in the first phase of admission, a total of 26,977 seats only have been filled up.
For instance, out 19,777 seats in Arts, only 16,341 seats have been filled up where as 3,436 seats are lying vacant.
In Plus 2 Science stream, only 8,217 out of 16,929 seats have been filled up and 8,712 seats are still lying vacant. Similarly in Commerce stream, out of 5,184 sanctioned seats, only 2,092 seats have been filled up so far giving rise to vacancy of 3,092 seats.
Significantly, this time the total number of sanctioned seats have outnumbered the total number of prospective applicants for which quite a large number of seats are lying vacant.
Citing an example, a teacher said that there are 256 sanctioned seats in +2 Science course in Aska Science College out of which only 99 seats have been filled up during the first phase of admission, giving rise to vacancy of 157 seats for which there are no applicants.
According to information available, out of 85 +2 colleges in the district, there are no students available to take admission in 11 colleges; followed by 39 out of 92 Plus Two in Science and in 21 out of 35 colleges in Commerce, there are no prospective applicants to take admission. Private colleges are the worst victims, sources said.
