Man's body exhumed in city, foul play suspected

The Commissionerate police on Saturday exhumed the body of a man from a house at the Dhirikuti slum under the Mancheswar police station here. Police suspected that he was murdered and then buried.

locals alleged that the man was murdered by his wife, who is now at large. The deceased, identified as Ashok Das (30), was not seen in the slum since last few weeks.

Ashok along with his wife Deepa and two children was staying in the slum since a month ago. He was working as a driver. When neighbours inquired about Ashok, his wife told them that he had gone out of station in connection with some work, locals said.

When the neighbours found the house locked for some days, they informed the police about the matter on Thursday evening. On Saturday morning, police along with a dog squad reached the spot and, upon exhuming four feet into the ground in the presence of a Magistrate, found the semi-decomposed body.

A coat of cement plaster was spread over the corpse, which was buried without clothes. The locals alleged that the couple had a strained relationship and used to quarrel most of the times. The deceased used to oppose the visit of other persons to the house in his absence. A local said the murder occurred at least two weeks ago, considering the condition of the corpse. It seems that more than one person was involved in disposing of the body given the way it has been buried.
