Mangrove restoration bid along Mahanadi basin

Published on:

The 'Baba Balunkeshwar Rural Development Council,' a prominent environmental and nature-oriented organisation in Jagatsinghpur district, has embarked on an extensive mangrove plantation initiative near the Mahanadi basin.

In the past two days, its dedicated volunteers have sown mangrove seeds along the northern banks of Telangadia, near Dhipa and Phulabellari, adjacent to the river in Kujang Block's Singitali.

Remarkably, more than three thousand mangrove seeds have found a new home within this expansive area in just two days. The institute had previously undertaken the plantation of hundreds of mangroves at this site, showing significant progress. This year's effort includes the planting of more than 3,000 Akhata, Rai, Garani, and Bandari mangrove species.

The region faces challenges such as frequent changes in the river's course and erosion of its banks, resulting in the degradation of idols. To combat these issues, the organisation has embarked on the ambitious mangrove planting initiative, said president of the CouncilAmaresh Naresh Samant. It is anticipated that the newly established mangrove forest will help mitigate these challenges.

Previously, the organisation had planted three thousand saplings on the east and south sides of the area.
