The Sikhya Vikash Mancha in a meeting here has urged the State Government to convert the Government College (Autonomous), Angul to a full-fledged university.

Angul, the centrally-located industrial capital of Odisha, is giving highest revenue to the State but has been continuously neglected in education and health sectors. Established in the year 1957 by the pioneering effort of the then Chief Minister Dr HK Mahatab and former MLA Hindol Kumuda Chandra Singh , the Government college  in Angul had got the ‘autonomous’ status by the University Grant Commission during the session 2006-07 and the college has been accredited by the NAAC.

However , in absense of a fullfledged university, the students of this industrial region are deprived of getting better higher education, research and capacity building initiatives on different aspects, they lamented.

The Manch, a forum of educationists, intellectuals, social actvists and leaders of various political parties, urged the Government to convert the college to a university.

The meeting, which was presided over by educationist Srikanta Mishra , among others was participated by Krishna Mohanty, Swapna Sarangi, Santanu Sar, Dr Dharanidhar Nath, Pratap Pradhan, Mahendra Bastia and Jitendra Sahu.

Mohanty and Sar were unanimously selected as chairperson and convener of the organisation respectively.
