The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued directions to the Odisha State Human Rights Commission (OSHRC) on May 28 to submit an action-taken report (ATR) on a case of police excess in Jharsuguda district.
A petition has been filed by a civil society organisation Human Rights Watch secretary Sangita Swain alleging that a resident of lajkura village under the Brajarajnagar block in Jharsuguda district, Gobardhan Rohidas was tortured by the Brajarajnagar police in their custody following which he was severely injured and had to be hospitalised.
Swain stated that the action violated human rights due to the unlawful action of the police. She prayed to the NHRC to take disciplinary action against the guilty police personnel and pay compensation of Rs 5 lakh to victim and also provide free medical facilities.
