In the backdrop of reports of collection of money by opening a fake social media account in the name of Odia cine actor Babusan, the Panikoili police in the district on Thursday arrested a person for allegedly duping a woman of money and jewellery impersonating as the actor.
The arrestee was identified as Rashmiranjan Mahuty alias Shakti of latipur village under the Khariar police station in Nuapada district. Police sources said a woman of Panikoili had lodged a complaint against Shakti alleging that he cheated her of Rs 37,000 and 70 grams of gold ornaments after luring her of giving her daughter a break in movies as a child artist, posing as Babusan through a Facebook ID created in the name of the actor.
The woman, suspecting foul play, later asked him to return the money but he denied doing so, reports said. Acting on the complaint, police laid a trap and arrested Shakti. The gold ornaments have been seized from his possession.
