A man and his niece, who had consumed poison and were rescued from a railway track near Haldipada station on Tuesday and hosptalised in a critical state, succumbed while undergoing treatment in the District Headquarters Hospital here.
The deceased were identified as Pramananda Mula and Arati Mula, residents of West Bahabalpur.
According to sources, they consumed pesticide to end their lives, unable to bear the opposition of their families to their illegal relationship. Pramananda was married and father of two children.
After facing resistance from the family members to the incestuous relationship, they reportedly had taken the drastic steps. They had been missing since Monday morning. On Tuesday early morning hours, they were first spotted by one Gopinath Das of Haldipada, 18 km from their house.
“Two cases under unnatural death have been registered. The bodies were handed over to their parents after postmortem,” said the Inspector-in-charge of Rupsa police station Ashok Nayak.
Police sources said that Pramananda had marital discord with his wife due to the illegal relationship. The entire family was in turmoil for quite some time. Even after repeated counselling, neither of them had relented.
