In a shocking incident, a man belonging to Kakharuni village in Kendrapada district killed his six-year-old son by throwing him into Mahanadi river from the Jobra Barrage at Cuttack three days ago. The matter came to the fore after the slain child’s grandfather Bidyadhar Mallick lodged a complaint with the Pattamundai police on Monday. He alleged that his son Dipak Mallick and daughter-in-law Minati Mallick either had killed his grandson Babul or sold him to someone else for abject poverty.

Acting on the complaint, the Pattamundai police started investigation by detaining the couple. They communicated the matter with Babul’s photo to all police stations under the Commissionerate Police as the couple was residing at Cuttack. later, the Jagatpur police told the Pattamundai PS that they retrieved a dead body of a child from the Mahanadi river near Jobra Barrage and the body looked like Babul. Pattamundai police soon interrogated the detained couple who confessed to the crime.

Dipak told the police that he and his wife with their son were walking on the Jobra Barrage on May 16 when he forcibly took away Bablu from Minati and threw him into the river in broad daylight. “Dipak is a drug-addict person. He fathers two children, including Babul. The reason behind Dipak killing his minor son is yet to be ascertained. The couple has been handed over to the Jagatpur police for further inquiry. A murder case has been registered at the Jagatpur police station,” said Kendrapada SP Satish Kumar Gajbhiye.
